Ceremonial handover of psychiatric clinic in Lüneburg: architecture that helps with healing

On 6.11.24, three years after the ground-breaking ceremony, the Lüneburg Psychiatric Clinic was officially opened in front of 120 guests. Interested people from Lüneburg were able to gain a personal impression during guided tours at the "Open Day". The new building with four wards for adult psychiatry will go into operation at the beginning of December. The architecture of the building focuses on people and the principles of respectful coexistence, acceptance and confidence.

Several green inner courtyards, the 1,400 square meter roof garden, bright rooms and spacious double rooms are just a few examples of the unique concept of patient-oriented architecture in Germany. The windows and terraces of the ward blocks are south-facing for an unobstructed view of nature - to create a positive setting for patients who have lost their zest for life, their perspective and their hold on the world.

Four wards from the current main building will now move into the new building. The main building is due to be demolished in 2026 to make way for the second construction phase. Until now, inpatient treatment for adult patients has taken place in 43 individual buildings on the extensive hospital grounds.

The costs for the first construction phase inaugurated today amount to around 54 million euros. The state of Lower Saxony has promised subsidies amounting to 41.7 million euros, with the remainder being provided by the hospital itself.
