New Community Center in Dresden-Johannstadt Officially Opened

On June 12, 2026, the new replacement building for the Dresden-Johannstadt Community Center was officially handed over. The new, accessible building provides a modern home for culture, social interaction, counseling, and community life in the neighborhood. Among other things, it brings together the cultural center, the “JoJo” children’s center, the neighborhood management office, and the Foreign Residents’ Council under one roof, thereby strengthening social cohesion and fostering exchange between generations and cultures.

The structural design combines robust construction with high flexibility of use. The two trapezoidal structures were built as seamless reinforced concrete skeleton structures: a two-story structure with a ventilation center on the roof and a single-story structure with a rooftop terrace. Beamless flat slabs with spans of up to 7.50 meters rest on exterior and corridor walls as well as individual columns. This allows two event rooms to be combined into one large hall accommodating up to 200 people.

Hollow-core elements were used to reduce deformation. Bracing is provided by cores and walls, and the building loads are transferred to the subsoil via bored pile foundations. The project was planned as a BIM project.

The client is the State Capital of Dresden. The architecture was designed by AKL I Architektenkooperation in collaboration with JBS Architekten and L10 Architekten Dresden. The new building was funded through the federal-state “Social Cohesion” program.
