Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University – New Building for the Faculty of Technology and Business in Heidenheim

With the construction of the new School of Engineering building at its Heidenheim campus, DHBW is further strengthening its role as a driving force in regional workforce development. On the former WCM site at Brenzpark, a modern university campus with 4,600 m² of usable space and bright inner courtyards is being built, enabling innovative teaching and learning concepts and meeting the highest ecological standards. In addition, the new buildings send a clear signal for resource-efficient construction and sustainable energy concepts.

The two five-story structures, constructed using a reinforced concrete skeleton system, are built with cast-in-place concrete without beams. In the area of the foyer staircase, prestressed flat slabs made of cast-in-place concrete were planned. Around 800 students, as well as the children’s and youth programs of the Zukunftsakademie Heidenheim (ZAK), will find flexible seminar rooms, a modern digital infrastructure, and state-of-the-art workspaces here—creating ideal conditions for hands-on learning and vital interdisciplinary exchange. The adjacent outdoor areas, featuring seating steps, lounging areas, and water features, make the campus a vibrant hub for students and residents alike.

The building is supplied with heating energy via 64 energy piles combined with two heat pumps and is passively cooled in the summer. A photovoltaic system on the roof and facade, covering approximately 300 m² and with a capacity of 60 kWp, produces clean electricity directly on-site. The new buildings send a clear signal for resource-efficient construction.
The project is certified Silver under the Sustainable Building Assessment System (BNB).

The completion of this project creates a sustainable university campus that exemplarily combines architecture, functionality, and sustainability.
